I've had 3 sunset platys and one blue platy in my tank (along with a mixture of other fish) for a couple months or longer now. I recently added 2 silver mollies and one bumblebee goby. Around the time I added them, as in no more than a day or 2 after, I noticed one of my sunset platys was hanging out in one of my plants and along the bottom of the tank. Upon closer inspection, she looks deformed, her spine looks bent. She responds to me, if I put a finger next to the glass wherever she is resting, she will swim around. But she'll soon settle back down somewhere.

Here's a couple pics, she didn't like the camera so it wasn't easy to snap a picture lol. http://www.flickr.com/photos/47466400@N05/

What is this? How did it suddenly pop up? The mollies show no symptoms. The goby hides a lot, but last I saw he was fine. Should I remove the platy? :(

Edit : I forgot... This is a 29 gallon tank, cleaned once a month or more depending on how it looks, all readings are within normal ranges. There were no other fish or decorations added w/in the last month until the ones just put in. Last cleaning was about 3 weeks ago, and I was planning to clean again today. I normally only change about 1/3 of the water, last cleaning was a little more.

Bent spine.
Birth defect, injury, vitamin deficiency, old age, fish tb, internal parasites.

Need to check for internal parasites.
Is the fish producing long stringy white poo, or clear mucas poo.
Is the anus enlarged, or red and inflamed.
Is there any worms prutruding from the anus.
Is the belly sunken in.
Do any fish look skinny or bloated.

This fish was perfectly normal looking when I bought her and for several months after. The stomach does look sunken in. Have not noticed anything wrong with her poo. She does seem to breath heavily esp after swimming around some. All other fish appear perfectly healthy. I did notice the blue platy had almost white poo this morning but otherwise is looking normal.

I'm not sure if her spine is even affected or if it's just the look produced by the sunken look of her belly.

I tried to snap another picture, maybe this will help. http://www.flickr.com/photos/47466400@N05/4354096792/

Sunken in belly can be fish tb, internal parasites, bacterial.

I think I would worm your fish for internal parasites.

Leave a link to fish tb symtoms.

Hi - I am someone else with the same problem,it only seems to be my platties that I have the problem with, maybe because they are the only livebearers I have? I lost my third fish in as many months yesterday, heartbreaking really as they have all seemed quite well in themselves right to the end. I think I will get some treatment for worms ( for the fish not me ) and treat them in my newly aquired hospital tank. Lets hope we can both fix our fish!!!

If once fish shows symtoms of camallanous worms best to treat the whole tank.

Here a link to a med for camallanous worms in the uk.

Once yu finished worming you back up with a bacterial med, or medicated food if you live in the united states.

What turned out to be the culprit and how did you fix it? I am having the same issues

Was wondering what ended up being the culprit and how did you fix it. I am having the same problem
Welcome to the forum

You might want to start a new thread for this issue as this thread is 11 years old and unlikely to be seen so easily. When you do start a new thread for your Platy problem, can you include your latest water chemistry tests, what is in the aquarium, size of aquarium and if possible can you post a photo of the full frontal of the aquarium please. This will help sort out what the issues are with your fish and thus hopefully get them feeling right again. :)

Please start a new thread listing the problem and the results of your water tests. Neither of the people asking a question in this thread have been on the forum for 12 years so they will not reply to your question.
Knowledge also moves on, so there may be more ways of treating a sick fish now than there were 12 years ago, and there are other members on the forum now who will be able to help you.
