I’ve got 5 female Platy’s and 3 males in a 12 UK gallon tank, I think at least one of them is pregnant but I'm not sure.

Do the males loose interest in the females once they are pregnant or will they keep chasing them no mater what?

Also 1 of my males seems very aggressive towards the other 2 males is this because I've got my ratios wrong? If so what should they be?

We have another larger tank that has 3 females and a male in it, is it worth me getting a couple more females and re-homing one of my males in there?

Any advice is most welcome as I’m at a loss what to do. ????

They loose some interest, because they can't mate with her again. She does secrete Pregnancy hormones, that they like, but the chasing goes down some, until she gets close to having her fry. Which is when males will sometimes chase her to stress her out, and eat the fry she releases.

It could be. The ideal ratio is one male per 2-3 females. It also could just be an aggressive male, they come along.

Sure. I'd get another 2-3 females, and try putting the aggressive male in there. If he is still mean, even with all the females and more room, he may need to be seperated. As long as there is planting and places to hide, though... he might calm down.

Thank you for the advice, at least i feel like i was thinking along the right lines :)

Im fairly new to the fish keeping passion, though my boyfriend has had his tank running for a couple of years and just thinks im over fussing :)

Nice pony by the way, did i see your name with a Haflinger picture by it? I think they are great use to have one when i was a teenager.

Thanks again for the advice, think it will be another trip to the LFS this weekend.

Halflinger? I don't know, I had my Belgian there for a couple weeks. They kind of look the same! Or it may have been someone else. :)

And yes, you were along the right lines! Good job. I'm sure you'll get the hang of fish keeping very soon. And then there is always this forum if you have trouble.

Another thing I thought of...what colors are your Male Platies, as this can sometimes have a effect on aggression...sounds strange, I know.

I will have to say im very pleased that i found the forum its helped alot already :D

Colours ok :) 1 sunset, 1 sunburst, and 1 Blue Moon (the aggressive one). I did wonder if the moon Platy's were more aggressive as we had a silver one in the other tank that was so bad he ended up being re-homed by the LFS.

And what color is the male in the other tank?

It does seem like blues seem to be more aggressive, especially to oranges. I have also had the same trouble! Maybe they just don't like orange. :dunno:

The male in the other tank is a big Red Wag Tail.

The Blue in my tank seems to have a major problem with the sunburst and only a bit of a problem with the sunset, but i think he is heading for the big tank this weekend.

Hope he will be ok, all my Platy's are about 1'', and the others in the big tank are about 2''.

If the other male is bigger, maybe he can put the aggressive one in his place. :p

Good luck though! Let us know how it turns out. If worst comes to worst, you might have to seperate the aggressive one away from all other males. Maybe switching him and the one in the big tank out.
