platy pregnant

I have had a Red Wag Platy for about 5-6 weeks now and I think she is going to have babies...not sure though!! She did get fatter and I think she has a gravid spot but I'm not sure. If she is pregnant she would of had to at the store. She only lived with a male platy in my tank for 2 days...then the male died. Something could of happened then but I don't think so. They stayed away from each other though. Do you think my platy is pregnant?? What are some other signs that she might be pregnant?? How long is it before they have their fry?? Please tell me as much as possible...ASAP!!!

no clue my platies seem to hate each other or my male is just a chicken......that cool that u're gonna have babies.......i think when she looks as tho she is gonna pop that is when u should move her into a breeding net or something

Platties carry diseases... I am not sure if she is pregno or not, when I said pregno I ment pregno/pregnant... I hope she is though, for better intrests for you and the tank

girly quite possible that you platy is pregnant, u may have got a male in your tank (look to see if you can see a stick males sex organ) plaaties usually have babies in 4weeks time but depending on water chemistry could be more or less time. If she is huge and about to burst then i would remove her to a seperate tank.

Hi Mel,
I'm concerned to hear about your fish deaths Was this a new tank? If so, the tank may not be properly cycled and the fish could have died from ammonia or nitrite poisoning. Please test your water and check and in the meantime, do a 10-15% water change daily and clean your gravel once a week.

It is possible she is pregnant - the dark spot may be the "gravid spot" which is an indicator of pregnancy. Platties can actually hold on to a pregnancy if the conditions are not right for them to give birth (such as an un-cycled tank) so possibly she's been pregnant for quite a while.

I don't know what a "kisser fish" is, but if it's a kissing gourami be aware they can grow very big and you may be looking for a new home for it soon. How big is your tank? Do try to find out what species it is so we can properly advise you. And no, animals can only get pregnant from another animal of the same species - otherwise there'd be cat-dogs running about, wouldn't there?

Tropical fish should not be kept with goldfish. This is for two reasons, but the main reason in this case is that goldfish are incredibly messy and will pollute the water which will kill your platies. Ideally, a goldfish requires a minimum of 5-10 gals of water per fish and heavy duty filtration. The other reason is that goldfish need cooler water and will not thrive in warm water. My recommendation is to find that goldfish a nice pond to release him in - he'd be a lot happier.

I HAVE A 5 GALON TANK. TONIGHT I WILL CLEAN THE TANK ETC AND GET BACK TO YOU. I WILL BE PUTING MY GOLD FISH WITH THE OTHERS IF THEIRS ROOM I WANTED TO KNOW IF IT WOULD BE BETTER TO ISOLATE HER LKE IN A BREEDING NET OF A SMALL TANK OF HER OWN?
