I don't know what the fins on their back are called but lately some of mine have them up a bit like a mohican if you know what I mean. What does that mean?

They are called "dorsal fin"; if the fish spreads its dorsal fin, it is flaring; flaring is usually a way of showing off or trying to intimidate the other fish.

Thanks I wondered about that.

I love learning all this new stuff lol.

That's a good sign. Happy, healthy fish have their dorsal fins up most of the time. A fish that has its dorsal fin clamped shut for long periods is usually cold, bullied or not feeling well.

If you have a livebearer with its dorsal fin extended, it is most likely displaying its good looks to a female. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, the horny guy is behaving like any male in a singles bar and trying his best to impress a female. Only the fish that are feeling their best will be acting like that.
