Had this platty fish for a month. Its been like this since it was bought. Its now in hospital tank due to hiding and not feeding in the main tank. It will only eat blood worms.its very timid but seems to be swimming around OK. Is this a defect from birth or fish TB? Thanks

This fish is either old or deformed through in breeding, Do a google search for platies and have a look at what good looking fish is like. When buying fish always do your research about what a perfect fish looks like and then select those fish at the LFS.

. I was leaning towards it being in breeding to. Cheers for the reply. I've got 5 normal shaped platies in a 28 gallon tank, all fine... . This one didn't take to it..I'll try and re introduce it. You're right. Should have done some looking into dodgy fish being sold before buying from the pet shop.

Forgot to mention...its very thin. Any ideas?
Could just be deformed (deformities are fairly common in livebearers which are often inbred) but could also be full of worms and struggling as a result. @Colin_T is better at this than I am.

Bear in mind that if it is something like worms or another parasite, the other fish will need to be treated at the same time too, since they were exposed to it too.

Thanks for your help everyone. Glad its not likely TB. I'll try worm med on it as its still really thin underneath. What's the best ? I'm in the UK. Thanks.

This fish is still alive but its not looking good. Even more bent body and lesions on its gills. One side fin doesn't work and the fish is skinny. I've medicated it internal parasite solution which looked like at one point to be working as its belly filled out. Now its even more slim. Pleased I never put it back in my main tank as I just had a feeling something wasn't quite right. I have a fish In my main tank that was bought at the same time as this one....they spent 3 weeks in quarantine tank together yet the other one is fine with no tb symptoms. What you guys reckon? Thanks.

What does the fish's poop look like?

Is it eating well or not eating at all?

If it does stringy white poop, it probably has an internal protozoan infection, but that will be hard to treat in the UK.

The following link has information about stringy white poop in fish?

Its poop is practically non existent.... Its not eating well at all......it will go to the food but not really bother with it. It will eat peas mostly and blood worms but even then its far n few between. Won't touch flakes or broccoli etc...

sounds like it's dying, I would euthanise it but the choice is yours.
Think I'm going to have to take your advice Colin. Thanks. What's the best way to disinfect the tank as I'd like to use it for the fry I have in a net in main tank.
