i woke up this morning and noticed that there seems to be a small chunk of my platties tailmissing and the last 4mm of my swords tail had a few white spots on it and is at a different angle to the rest of the tail ( pointing up slightly) what could be the cause of this ???

55g tank
6 cherry barbs
2 dwarf gouramis
1 swordtail
1 platty

ammonia, nitrate, nitrite are fine
not sure about ph (no test kit)

Your swordies spots could be white spot (or ich).

Ich

Your platy's tail sounds like it's been nipped by one of your other fish, with clean, warm water it should heal fine.

I would be more inclined to say finrot. What do the white spots look like? Small, like grains of salt, would be ich- a larger spot, that then falls off leaving a hole, is finrot. This is treated with finrot treatment, or with anti-bacterial medicine- the latter probably better, as it seems to have progressed quite far. Either pimafix or Interpets anti-bacterial treatment.
When you say your water stats are fine- what are the exact readings?
