I was told by a fish keeping friend of mine that feeding platies some of the spice Paprika once a week will intensify the red colour in the fish.
has anybody ever heard of this before?
or tried it?

Never heard of it myself, not sure if I'd recommend it!! If you just feed them good quality flake with brine shrimp every now and then their full colour will come naturally

I was told that also when I had my first tank, when I asked the people at the fish store they told me that it would most likely kill my fish as they don't have saliva to break down the proteins in that sort of spice. I don't know which is true but I will try to investigate that for you. Some blanched veggies, live food, (such as blood worms), and a quality flake is all you need! Please Please Please investigate any claims of "weird" "miracle" things to improve color. I have heard people say use food color!!!!! For heavens sake!
I am not meaning to get on you as you obviously care enough to ask!

I have not found anything saying paprika or any other spice helps promote color.
