I have been reading about platies and how to to tell if male or female but I can't sex 1 of them :dunno: I think I have 2 males and 2 females (deffo 2 males though). I have 1 red (comet) platy, 2 (mickey mouse) crest platies and 1 blue platy(mickey mouse).

It's the blue platy that I cant sex... it's larger than all the others(big belly n so on) but looking at its fin it looks like the males plus it dont stay still for very long for me to take a good look at it. It quite happily swims about with all the other platies chasing or being chased but my red platy(male) has been a lot more active since I put the blue platy in the tank.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on this or do I just sit an wait to see if it gets fatter n produces young ?

I have 1 female and 1 male

The Female is usually rounder bellied, but they have a triangle shape fin underneath, whereas males fin underneath is kinda long and pointed...

Have you got any pictures?

Take a look very close look at the blue platies fin you can just make out a black line to see the full shape and it is a lot bigger than the red platy its just the angle they are on. Thanks for helping.

Sorry if pic to big forgot to resize

So no1 wants to help me sex my blue platy ? I'm just not 100% about its sex because its fin seems bigger than males but is a lot smaller than my other female platies...

If you are talking about the Blue Platy on the top, she is definitely female. All females vary in fin size, and body size and such, so you can't go by that. You have to go by the gonopodium, or fanned anal fin. I am 100% sure she's female though. :)

However, your ratio is a little messed up...it's best to have 2-3 females per male, because otherwise the males will constantly harrass the one female, and stress her out which can make her more prone to disease, and birthing troubles amoung other things. It's be best if you could get another 3-4 females.

Thats a dumb thing to do. Bitten fins grow back right quick. What if the next one gets bitten?

I swapped it as it was being bullied and every1 has recommended not to have 2 female an 2 male platies.
