I have a whole lot of fry at the moment, and my friend just a got a goldfish bowl.
She asked if she could have a couple of fry.
Can platies live in unheated water? :dunno:
i live in australia so the temperature doesnt get to cold.
Or would it be best not to risk it?

Thanks

Kellie

I wouldn't recommend putting Platy in a bowl in the first place (unless it's several gallons in size, and has filtration). As for the temperature, if the room temperature is high enough, then no heater is necessarily needed. According to the Baensch Atlas, Platies tolerate water as cold as 18C/ 64F.

Don't give your fry to him. They will DIE. He problebly knows very little and is a newbie. Tell him that goldfish CANNOT, and I repeat...CANNOT live in bowls. If your friend wants a fish in a bowl, tell him or her to get a betta. Bowls have much too little surface area, and won't hold enough oxygen for the goldfish alone, so why put a bunch of other fish in with it? Tell him or her to get a tank, or return the goldfish for a betta. I heard that goldfish can only live for around a month in a bowl. And they will get big, and outgrow it.

Sorry for sounding so...er....harsh, but it's the real truth. Goldfish cannot live in bowl except for HUGE ones with filteration and aeriation. They poop a lot, and are messy eaters. The ammonia will go up rapidly because of that. And since it's a bowl, it won't have enough oxygen for beneficial bacteria to grow. Especially since i'm assuming your friend doesn't even have a filter. Poor goldfish...:(

I dont think the friend has a goldfish but goldfish can actually live in bowls for a long time
Goldfish can live in the bowl until the outgrow it

Platies however, can only live in bowls with some sort of filtration

I suggest you give the fry away if you dont want them (it is better than killing them)

Also, with platies, the friend might be inspired to get a tank

I think "fry" can live in bowls for a while because it is similar to a breeding box but after a while, they need filtration...

Goldfish can live in bowls I suppose but its like saying dogs can live in their own feces or people can live in cardboard boxes. Its possible buts its not a very good life. Life in a bowl is very stressful for any fish especially for goldfish. Bowls don't have filtration so the fish end up swimming in their own feces. Pretty gross! Unless the water is changed every few days it just becomes worse and worse. It would be like living in a baby diaper.

Platy are tropical fish. They need temperatures in the mid 70s or their metabolism can slow down too much and they will get sick and won't digest food correctly. Fry need the same temperature as adult fish but are more less likely to survive under harsh conditions. Baby fish need well filtered water in the mid to high 70s to grow correctly. If the water is too cold they will develop slowly and can become stunted.

There are filters for fish bowls that can be bought. They usually don't cost that much money. But the best way to have a thriving fish in a bowl is to do many many water changes (and don't forget the water conditioner to take the chlorine out!).

Some mollies can survive in salt water.
Did you post in a wrong topic?

FlareBettaGuy, I don't think she was talking about giving her friend goldfish fry, but Platy fry. But which ever fish we are talking about, I still wouldn't recommend keeping them in a bowl. Like said earlier, Betta is the only fish that's suitable for a bowl.

No, I told her to tell her friend that her goldfish should not live in a bowl and not to give her the platy fry. I knew that they were platy fry, I was just telling her not to give them to her friend, and at the same time telling her she should tell her friend to get the goldfish a tank or something. Sorry that got mixed up.

Lol, ok. Based on her post it wasn't clear if there was any fish in the bowl in the first place. I understood that bowl was empty so far. Just called a "goldfish bowl". :)

WHOOPS! I thought that there were goldfish in the goldfish bowl! Sorry, my bad. But why do they call some bowls goldfish bowls when bowls are not suitible for goldfish?? :/ Strange. Anyway, just forget about the whole goldfish/new tank thing, and just remember the part that the only fish that would be at least happy in a fish bowl would be a betta. No exceptions.
