i have kept fish for a while now, mainly cichlids but my lil bro started and he has a lil 2 foot tank, now we had a platie in a breeding trap, that night she gave birth, now all the fish were in sacks??, shells, i no it sounds silly as i have never come across this, the ph and nitrate levels r all very good and well filtered, natural tank, maybe these babies just a lil early??.. she is fairly young!!

thanks everyone..

They well could be early borns, which means that they are born very small and have quite large yolk sacs. Which are usually used up whilst inside the Mother. Im not sure if her age has anything to do with but then I don't know anything that could have caused it.

Stress causes this (probably from being put in the net too early/late - it's best to put them in either so early that they get used to it or literally just before they start giving birth - the latter is better because it causes the mother less stress). I'd be extremely surprised if the fry were to survive.

its stupid to put them in the breeding trap, let the have babies and take them out of the tank. The mother cant eat till 2-4 hours after givin birth

Afraid this is not accurate; I have seen both platy and guppy females turn round and literally devour the fry that has just come out of them, then have another and do the same. And I do not starve my fish; some of them just seem to like eating fry. Others I've had are totally uninterested even after a day; seems to be a matter of personality.

I would still follow Stone Warrior's advice, though. A better use for the breeding trap is to save the fry as they are born and put them in it for the first week or two until they become a bit more confident.

I have had the same problem as you, with livebearer fry being born prematurely, though in this case the stress was due to infection and bullying. You need to be extra careful with the mother, and make sure nothing is stressing her out, as she will be weakened by her ordeal. My female recovered and went on to live a happy life, but none of the premature fry survived.

Signs that a female is ready to give birth can include irritability, a desire to be by herself, hiding in the plants or at the bottom of the tank.

cheers everyone!!

well she pregnant again so i will leave her and catch the fry after birth as just re-planeted all new plants!! he he

cheers!! :p
