Hi All,

I am thinking of starting a small breeding project in my garage.
Say 4/5 tanks to start and then see how I go from there.

I am struggling to find a cheap glass box type tank. All the lfs that I have been to just sell tanks with all the extras which is not what I want.

I thought of using those big transparent plastic containers instead. For one, they are quite cheap. And they also come in a load of different sizes.
Someone though has told me that they quickly become opaque.

Has anyone used these?
Any experiences?
Thanks
Squidward

have you not thought of making your own glass tanks that way you have the final decision on exactly what you want, also ebay, you see plenty of bare tanks on there as well as specific breeding tanks

I got a quote from a glass co.
And it was more expensive than the tanks from my lfs with all the extras. And I am useless at DIY :fun:

I have looked on Ebay, AC, Gumtree etc. And so far nothing.

not sure what size tanks you are looking for but i'm fairly certain you can get basic tanks from pets at home starting at around £15 ea

Things like sweater boxes work fine but they are not truly transparent. You can buy them in almost any size you need but do not fill them up all the way. They are not designed to hold water well so the sides bow out quite badly if you fill them much more than about half way.

Ok, bad idea then.

Will carry on looking for proper tanks then.
There is a P@H not far from where I live, so I may venture into it on the weekend.

To be fair i got a 80L one to use to grow out my apples and filled to the almost to the top maybe 70l and it was fine, yes a bowed a little but nothing major

could you put a wooden brace round it to stop it from bowing? i used one as a sump it worked fine but was only ever 2/3 full at max

Back in the early 80's I was breeding tetras. Used sweater boxes with home made spawning mops. True they're not transparent but the fish didn't really seem to mind at all. By the time you figure the cost of 20 tanks vs 20 sweater boxes it became apparent what to use. If you put them into some type of rack and punch thru holes for bulkhead fittings filtration gets easier. I used sponge filters in all 20 with a Supreme Dynamaster supplying the air.

P@H can order in small Clearseal glass tanks which are a good size for breeding projects. but they dont come with lids, so you might need some made by a local glazier.

I recently used a 64L storage box from Staples for holding my fish while I redid my tank. It worked great, no bowing or anything. It only filled it up to the 50L mark but it's surface area was much better than any clearseal 50L tank.

I think if you buy good quality storage boxes you'll be OK.

Good Luck,
