I was looking around on the internet, and dont see them anywhere, you know the little clear plastic box with carbon and floss in it.... Anyone still make/sell them?

Heh, I dont want to, but i havent been in the aquarium world for probably 5 years, and don't see them anymore, just curious ya know.... One LFS here has round ones in all of their tanks, but I havent been there to ask about them.....

I always liked them, I had a 75 Gallon tank with 2 12 inch oscars and a 8 inch Jack Dempsey, I found the only way to keep it good and clean was with 4 large box filters in it, everything else the 3 fish wrecking crew either tried to eat, or just plain destroyed.

EEEK! A box filter on a 75 gallon tank?!?! You must did a lot of frequent water changes/gravel cleaning. Something that large and with messy fish, I would stick with either a canister filter or wet/Dry filter.

Its the prefilters to the can or wetdry that do a huge portion of the work. The sponge pulls out the huge poo which you dont want to get to the can or wet dry...
Thats the same as using the sponge. Granted you do still need a way to convert the nitrogen over as well.

They were large, probably 4x6 inch, and I had 4 of them. Gotta remember this was about 12 years ago, I was 13-14 years old, and they worked for the money I had. I tried a using a cannister that was used for my parents goldfish pond, but the big guys had a knack for knocking the intake tube off at the top of the tank, so that was a lost cause. Also tried a couple big sponge filters, but they tried to eat them, came home to a bunch of pieces of sponge floating around in the tank. I only had about 1/2 inch of gravel in the bottom and did do frequent cleanings (what else do you have to do when your 13? LOL). I ended up selling the tank and fish back to the guy I bought them from after about a year of having it (of course for a loss of money!)

Like I said, I was just curious if they had went to the wayside....

Yes, they do make the in tank boxs' still. You'll probably have to have your lfs order them but they are still being made because Breeders like to use them as they are fantastic filters for a serious breeding setup.

There is a page about them here. They are still available, here for example. If you search google for "Corner Filter" you'll find loads of others.

Hi LL :)

Thanks for the excellent link about box filters.

Personally, I like the things and use them in my breeding tanks once the fry have grown past the tiny stage. I wish I could find a bigger one, though.

I think most folks just make them now a days... should be a simple dyi.

I think they're not that common now in fry tanks is becuase most people use those sponge filters with an airline tube connected to an airpump. This offers an excellent biological filtration and mechanical filtration, though no chemical filtration, compared to the corner box filters.
