ok another question this time plants!

so far we have only had plastic plants (boo) :(

but today we're going to get some real ones(yay) :)

but don't know what to get or what to do with them

at the lfs we've seen two sorts, ones in pots and ones ties with what looks like metal.

if we get the metal ones do we take it of, do we just put it in the sand (mum has to do this cus if try to she says i'm in dangour of falling in, anyway even with a ladder i can't reach the bottom)

thanks again (i'm feeling realy thick now)

Hi Hattie,
I like to buy my plants in pots......they seem to be bigger and survive better than the bunched ones(in the metal)
In the past ,when I have bought bunched plants I have planted them with the metal bit still on.....It helps to weigh the plant down into the gravel.Hope this helps.

When you're at the lfs ask for anarcharis, java moss, anubias congensis, or Moneywort (Bacopa Monnieri) is a nice edition.

wow, i wish i had a tank so big i could fall in it!

i like plants that come in pots. they already have a root system established and seem to settle in better. however i have also bought bunched plants tied with metal. when i buy these i take the metal bit off, because it makes the stem rot IME.

if you get potted plants, take off the pot and very carefully peel of the wooly stuff thats around the plant's roots. this allows the plant freedom to spread out its roots.

have fun :fun:

Tell your mum that if you fall in the fish love you and will make sure to keep you at the top of the tank. :fun:

On plants. It kind of depends on what they have and the setup of your tank. I have purchased both planted, loose, and banded plants. Banded are the ones with the metal bands and loose are ones, such as amazon swords and others, that are not banded or in pots.

If the plant looks good and is in good condition it shouldn't matter which you buy. Just remember that the plants need to be planted. Even those in pots, you will need to take out of the pots and remove all the fiber then plant. You don't want to lose plants because they are root bound. :/

Depending on what substrate (gravel/sand) you have you may also want to pick up "root tabs". Seachem Flourish Tabs are recommended by many, and there are others also. Your LFS probably has a few different ones in stock, and could order what they don't have. The tabs are a good plant food and will help the plants to thrive.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi Hattie! :) You might want to try some Vallis, or Vallisneria, as I find it is really easy to grow in my water of Ph 7.0. It sends out runners beneath the gravel, and in a few weeks you will have many more than the number you started with. I leave the lead strips on, as I find they float away otherwise. :)
