I've decide to plant my 21.6 litre. I've never had plants before so just wanna get ones that I can just put in and they don't need anything other than light to survive. Can anyone give me some ideas. Also do I just pop them into the gravel and that's it, they'll take root? Annd when I gravel vack unlic my fake plants they just stay where they are and I go roud them?

Thanks for any suggestions I'm hoping to go to the lfs later to get some. I've seen them in the lfs but never really looked. Are they usually labelled up telling you what to do with them and what they need?

Oh and would a pitbull plec eat real plants?

This was my last shopping list for plants. They are all doing well and i dont add fertz or co2, very easy to grow :good:

All i did was unpack them trim the roots to encourge new growth and push them into the sand. After a few weeks they will root so when you clean they stay put(i stay away from them for the 1st month as often they would float up after a clean makeing me drink from the well of rage! :< )

Hygrophila Guanens
Echinodorus Ozelot Green
Polygonum sp. Sao Paulo
Aquafleur Bacopa Monnie
Bolbitus Heudelotii
Acorus Gramineus Pusilles

It all depends on light, it's not as simple as just throw them in and leave them if your lighting is intense and it increases the plant demands as the rate of photosynthesis increases, good low light slow growers I'd use:

Anubias spp., Cryptocoryne's spp., Echinodorus spp., Valliseneria spp. (probably too tall), Microsorum pteropus, Hygrophila polysperma and various mosses.

Your pitbull pleco I think is quite big for your tank. One pitbull should have a minimum of 70L to grow to adult otherwise, they won't reach their biggest size. Plants need several factors in order to survive such as light, CO2, nutrients and minerals. Although, it really depends on species. Some plants require high light levels or other factors, while some are "hardier", which means, they can survive without the need of adding special fertilisers/CO2 etc. Plants struggle to adhere themselves to the gravel. It's sand that you want if you want them to attach properly. If you try to plant it on the gravel, you might break some roots. Your pleco loves planted aquarium, so they don't eat them :p!

Thanks. If they grow too much do you just trim them? My light isn't very bright on this tank. I can have it on all day from 9am till 12 at night and I never get any algae.

Pitbull plecs only stay small and he is full size. He was in my 60L but he hid in the back corner the whole time. He's only in with one Betta so he has plenty of room. Now he comes out all the time. Also I've seen loads of lovely planted tanks on here with a gravel substrate. My gravel is a fine gravel too.

How do prices of plants in the shops comapre to ebay? I've seen loads on ebay or is it best to get them from the lfs or pets at home?

9-12 is way too long for plants, 8 hours maximum, use a timer, I also agree on the Pitbull Pleco, it needs a larger tank and they should be kept in groups of at least 4 also being social catfish.

If you dont mind cuttings and want to grow the plants from cuttings The last trading post on ebay sells decent plants :good:
