Hello,

I want to put some plants in my betta tank, would real ones be best? And if so, as its only a 5gln hex what could i use to light it, would a desk lamp be ok?

Live plants are a great idea, glad you thought of it first before the plastic/silk. As for lighting see if there is a hood with a light fixture in it, but if not a desk lap would be nice, though live plants do need quite a bit of lighting. I'd look for a hood and go from there first. Aquabid or Ebay and the local pet stores might have them for Hex's. :)

Good low light plants include Java fern, java moss, hornwort (floating), anubias and Egeria densa.

Bettas love java moss, it's cheap (at least here it is) and dead easy to keep. Just throw some in the tank and walk away. :D

Another easy one I've found is Ambulia. It's not rated as a low light plant but it's a fast grower with nice soft, feathery fronds that my girls love going through.

Thanks guys thats really helpful. I am hoping to get a proper light but will have to make do with a desklamp for now

I have Java Fern, too. Sushi loved it when I got it for him. It was about $4.00 at Petsmart, but even in the last week it has grown about 1 inch.
