Hey,

We've just this morning made a new pond for our 2 little koi (digging kindly done by our neighbours JCB  ) and its looking a little bare. So far we have 1 water lily and some bunches of oxygenating plants (not labelled at garden centre!) and some water hyacinth (i think!!) but as the pond is fairly big it needs a lot more plants.

So, the pond is 8ft long, 5 ft wide and 3ft deep. We really want some plants that could go into the bottom and grow up through it, if that makes any sense -_- Can anyone suggest any plants that are easily available that would brighten up the pond a bit?!

Oooh, and the koi had just come out of a 4ft x 3ftx 2ft pond so are loving their new home! :D

Thanks!

Irises look nice jess they grow very tall, ours are just starting to flower now :)

like the blue ones in this pond

erm irises do look nice but not in deep water lol,how deep is the pond round the edges ? if 3ft then youl have to raise the containers some how so the top of the pot is level with the top of the water ,

you can also get floating plants similar to water hyacinth, erm water lettuce, water soldier to name 2 be aware though that these plants arnt frost tolerant reed type plants look great but need the same conditions as iris

this bloke stocks quite a large range so you should be able to get some ideas

cat when did you take that pic i never saw you in my garden ??  i wish

 Isn't it gorgeous Bri I wish it was our back yard, maybe when i find a millionaire lol

Hey our Irises are in 3ft -_-

Wow! Those irises are beautiful!!! :D The edge of the pond is about 2'6 deep but we ideally wanted something that could grow in the middle as there are quite a few plants at the garden centres that will go around the edges.

Thanks for the link!

I don't mean to put a dampner on your enthusiam but i can see problems.
Firstly your pond isn't deep enough for koi but is ok for goldfish. If we get a really cold snap during winter they won't survive it.
Secondly koi and plants don't go together at all.Unlike goldfish koi will dig up and decimate any plants. You can get away with marginal plants that have only an inch of water above the tops of their containers but anything deeper will be shedded.

3ft is fine for koi ?

ive had some of my koi for close on 5 years now and never lost any due to cold spells

my irises are yellow cat and hate deep water ,like yours the flowers just starting to show :D

they will daudy its there nature to dig them up ,i had to take the spade off mine

plants raised up above the surface will be fine ,i always chuck bunches into the bottom for the fish to feed on ,i did have a water lettuce (not much left of it lol) but the fish will leave some types of plants alone

best idea i can come up with for plants is to plant them in deep containers then grow them on a bit in a bucket water

my problem at the moment is the sycamore is flowering and dropping all manner of stuff into the pond petals flowers leaves you name it :-(

Ours are yellow they have just come out now.We start ours on the shelf then lower them to the deepest level,we also put large cobbles around the plants,to big for the koi to move

I think a pond looks bare without plants, we have loads in our pond and the koi can't disturb them.

The lillies are starting to spread over the top now, will look good when they flower to
