i have a one gallon tank, but I really want to put plants in it. Are there any that will grow in such a small tank?

im not sure what type of lighting are you using,,,,,if anything make sure the plant only needs low amounts of light.

I have some dwarf sagittaria ,small grass-like stuff, in a 2 gallon and it's doing fine
It hardly gets any light because I rarely turn them on and it seems to be growing anyway

How high is your tank? Assuming it is quite short, you should be able to grow any of the foreground plants like dwarf sagittaria, dwarf rushes, any of the smaller cryptocorynes, dwarf sword or the Takashi Amano favourite Glossostigma Elatinoides.

You should also be able to grow floating varieties but that would limit the bottom growers as their light supply would become limited by the floaters.

Make sure there is plenty of water circulation and a good substrate.

Glossostigma needs too much light for a 5 watt.

I would recommend Anubias nana. It is a small plant that can handle very low light situations. They are the smallest of the Anubias family, and can be kept to a very small size. Also, they have broad leaves and they are tightly packed around a rhizome. These are very low demanding plants, and mine have even flowered.

Also, duckweed or a small amout of hornwort would be great floating plants. These do have to be trimmed back or removed every now and then because they grow fast. These make great habbitats for babies or killies.

hmm i think my tank is around 10" tall...

one other thing: the tank has a ug filter. can i have plants with this if i have good substrate over it, or should i change the filter to a canister filter?

i'm glad this post is here, saves methe trouble of creating a new one. i am going this weekend to get a 1 gallon tank for my desk at work to keep a betta in and would also like natural plants. the will be very good light coming in from outside, broad spectrum flouresent and alot of it. I will have to look into the dwarf saggitaria and anubias nana. also the light in the office are on 24/7 shoud I make a cover to cover the tank when I leave for the day? i can have an early arriving colleague remove the cover so there will be about 12 hours of light coming into the tank.

And it also need warm and clear water. How are you going to warm and filter water? Best way is to buy atleast 10gal aquarium, filter, heater and fluorescent tube. Buy lots of natural plants into it.

Please, use your common sense, when keeping living creature...

water temp in the office stays at 76 degrees Farenheit. the tank comes with a ugf and it sits directly under a 70 watt flouresent desk lamp. I would love a 10 gallon tank at work but do not have that much room as my desk also functions as a pc building area. the betta seems very happy in his little 1 gallon. it is filtered and is much larger than the little cup they keep them in at the store.

But it's only temporary place. However, I don't buy fishes either from store that keeps any fish in a cup - like bettas... Neither my friends... Here where I live, is couple store that keeps bettas in 3-4 liters, 1 gal, water :-( Lucky, they usually are sold in couple days, so they get bigger "cup" quickly. As you have already read, I have told earlier that we have some laws for fishes too and if you are keeping aquarium here in Finland, you have to buy atleast 40 liters tank (>10 us gal). 10 gal is good size for one male betta.

Do you have to put any tank on the desk if there isn't enough space??? :S

all i know is he seems very happy. he swims around very actively and when iever I put my face close to the tank he comes to the front and kisses the tank. during feeding time he will eat right oput of my hand. I'm sorry if a 1 gallon tank for a betta offends you but mine sure seems to like it.

Oh dont worry about him! If your 1 gallon makes your betta happy, then so be it! Who cares what he thinks! :D

I think it is interesting that Finland has this kind of a law. I wish we had a law that fish could not be kept in little plastic cups (temporary, yes, until they are sold or die) :-(

What we need here is a little flexibility. Jesse, your heart is in the right place, but I'm not sure it's very productive on a "friendly" forum to cavalierly dismiss another member's concerns.

Perhaps Mr. V could entertain the possibility of Tanked's betta being content in his very well furnished and cared for 1 gallon when his prior life was spent in much more miserly accomodations.

By the same token, perhaps we can appreciate that there is a country out there that respects the fish we love enough to pass laws that attempt to protect them.

I have to point out, however, that I've seen large fish, such as Pacus, in 10 and even 20 gallon tanks that look decidedly less at home than any betta would be in a gallon of water. Everything is relative.
