i have a 46gallon bowhead tank, i have gravel and 3 fake plants. Wondering if i could add a real plant or two to it. Or do i have to get rid of the fake plants to do so

Add as many live plants as you'd like! You can have a mix of live and fake plants - that won't be a problem. Once you get the live plants, though, you might decide you like 'em so much that you don't want the fake ones :D

Enjoy!

The fishes are loving it. As long as their 'happy', so am I. Haven't had a death from that tank for a while now. :)

Real plants at all times and as many as you can get in the tank!!!!!!!! :D

As for tha gravel.....what filter are you running?
i am currently running 2 filter a Top fin 40 and a Penguin bio-wheel 125

a bit more gravel would be useful to anchor the plants.

i gues you're gonna be looking for easy low maintenance plants if they are your first ones, if you tell us the volume of the tank and the wattage of the light we could help out.

the tank is a bowhead 46 gallon, and the light is a 30watt, also have a 150watt heater, dont know if that helps or not

Hmm

You have very low light but you might be able to grow the following plants:

anubias
java fern
java moss
cryptocoryne

a bare minimum of 46W (1 watt per gallon) would usually be recommended and 2-3wpg would be great. however give it a go if you want and you might be lucky :)

however if you want lots of strong healthy plants then you might want to look into upgrading you lighting.

a very dumb question i have I can go buy a new light only right? dont need to upgrade ballast or anything do I. Btw the light i have in there now has a purple colour to it,

You have to have one ballast per tube (unless it's a twin ballast of course). You can change tubes as long as the ballast has the correct output - if you don't know the details stick to a tube the same length as the original (if in doubt, take the old tube into the LFS and show them).

The upgrade options available are:

*Buy a new tube with a higher wattage (most T8 tubes only go up to around 38w, T5's have higher outputs but need different ballasts)
*Buy another ballast and get 2nd tube (therefore doubling the light output)
*Buy a reflector and clip it onto your existing tube (theoretically doubling the light output)
*Buy a whole new set-up and get T5's, etc.
