hi all basically i want to completely redo by betta tank and want to change the gravel that is currently in it and put black sand in, I would also like to quite heavily plant it, so my question is? whats everyones views on doing the substrate?? do you use layers of different types such as fertilised soil etc then sand on top??? or cat litter then sand on top?? do you use fertiliser tabs???

lil info on the tank:
Aqua one nano 40 (55L)
original filter and light
I am currently dosing API leaf zone but have got some TNC lite to replace the API
I dont have a C02 system so low tech setup

stocking:
1 male betta
10 cardinal tetra

any suggestions welcomed

Cat litter would be the cheapest option, but doesn't come with any nutritional values at all. Eventually it will load itself with any excess nutrients that are available in your water column, so it would work in time. No doubt that buying a specialist substrate that is pre loaded with nutrients is a better option, but comes at a price, and eventually won't be a deal better than cat litter.

Root tabs all help as does any nutrients, but they're not essential. You could look into using a co2 reactor setup on a tank of that size using the sugar and yeast method. :good:

I've used Laterite with a good amount of success. It definitely helped me out growing my swords and my wisteria plant grew like CRAZY from it. I was quite happy with it. My only complaint is that it can get kicked up easily from the sand, and it maybe doesn't work as well as other substrates, but I'm pleased with it. :)
Just be careful - I know some people have used Miracle Gro as a planting substrate, but I personally don't support using it because of the chemical additives in the soil.
