Hi! I now own a new ten gallon aquarium that is clean and fresh and cycled and has a varitey of ornaments on it.

I have a couple questions about how to start a planted tank.

So i have right now gravel, cheap kind like brightly colored.

What do i need, where can i get the stuff for, and would it be at all worth it to try to make the ten gallon a planted?

Just curious. Hoping to try a betta, have had 3 failures from walmart though. I cant really get the formula right yet i guess. Just keep trying though!

Thanks

I have Anubias plants in my Betta tanks, which don't require much lighting or Co2 and they grow well.  Best of all they're sturdy enough so the Bettas can use them as a hammock.  They appreciate floating plants also.

I've just started mine so I am just a touch ahead of where you are - here's what I learnt and hope it helps :)

There are two main groups of plants - those that like a lot of light, and those that are happy with just normal light. The normal light ones are what you want to start with.
You will also need:

Plant fertliser - I use API plant fert
Liquid iron - I use aquarealm
Trace minerals - I use Flourish trace
Carbon source - I use Flourish excel

So weekly you will add your doses of trace minerals, liquid iron and plant fertiliser. Daily or every two days, you add your carbon source.

Some plants need to be buried in your substrate and some will die if buried in substrate!

These are what I have, and they are doing well in my betta tank with normal lighting:
Anubia (attach to wood, don't bury them)
Java fern (attach to wood, don't bury)
Fissidens fontanus (I've put mine on moss mats)
Blyxa (this is more of a high light plant, but seems to be happy with the current light)

Hope this helps :)
