Planted Tank

hi all,
can anybody give me an opion on weather it is ok to put gravel on one side of the tank and sand on the other.
will sand be good enough on its own for a tank with plants and bog wood.any ideas or suggestions please.
the tank is a jewel rio 240 litre running on a jewel filter.this is another issue would i be better to use an external filter and take out the orignal one.it not setup yet.i have 3 tanks already and am moving soon so i am planning to set it up when in the new place.all suggestions will be much apprioated thanks.

neon tetra , albino corys , rummie nose tetras , and zebra dianos are some of the fish that will be in the tank and a pleco.

Hi and welcome to TFF

I used all sand and my plants are fine, as long as you dose ferts, you should be fine without a nutrient rich substrate.

Can i point you to this thread so you dont make the same mistake i did when setting up a planted tank.

before you set the tank up i would go down to your pets at home and get some clay cat litter that is 100% clumping clay cat litter...it will bind nutrients when you dose them and give them out slowly...obviously it will need to be capped with sand and or gravel first.

no i mean clumping...it takes on nutrients better, it isnt strictly necessary but it will help an awful lot

If it clumps when wet, it will turn into a one big mass, thus preventing anything getting to the roots.

Basically, what you have is fine for plants as long as you dose fertiliser directly into the water. If you can be bothered, a proper planted substrate will help, but is not vital at all.

routes will penetrate the clay as it goes sludgy a bit like tropica or JBL clay substrates
