Just bought a new tank a Fluval Roma 90 and need to sort out the substrate. I've used eco complete before just wondered if there's anything better or prefered now.

Any help mucho appreciated.

I use Red Sea Florabase because I like its natural look, it doesn't need to be washed and plants seem like it.

Personally I prefer a decent planted substrate with a layer of sand - my current choice would be Tropica Plant Substrate topped with something like Hagen Black River Sand. Both can be found at www.aquaessentials.co.uk if you are UK based.

Eco-complete is a great substrate, I would only change if you are after a different look, as black doesn't suit all tanks. As Nry says tropica plant substrate gets good review, band as you top it with gravel or sand you can have any look you want. Most of the 'complete' substrates work well. Laterite is perhaps one to avoid, its ok but doesn't really supply anything other than iron, the 'complete' substrates provide a range of minerals. If you want the best the ADA aquasoil is top gun, but it does lower the pH so probably best for the more experienced fish keeper.

Strangely this was one of my thoughts as well. I suppose I fancied something different to eco complete having done my last two tanks with it.
