Plant Id And How To Trim

hi all the plant in the middle here behind the bogwood is growing well can you tell me what it is and what the best way to trim it down is?

ive been told you should nt cut plants?

Reading from work at the moment so cant open the picture up full, will take a look when I get home though. For stem plants just cut them above a leaf node and they should be fine, they will normally put a couple of new shoots out of the node you cut above. If you then trim the bit you cut off to just below the next leaf node and replant it then it will probably carry on growing and eventually root.
