hi guys, i have recently set up my new aquarium and have added a small variety of plants.
initially i had two small pieces of bogwood which had been prepared for the tank, but removed them after a few days as the water was becoming discoloured.
a few days later the water was clear, but my plants are quickly gaining a soft brown deposit on the upper side of the leaves.
are the plants simply absorbing the discolouration from the water or is this a seperate problem i have?

seems an informative and helpful forum this one , so well done everyone. :D

soft brown deposit on the upper side of the leaves? sounds like algae to me... try to limit the amount of nitrates in your water with regular water changes and keep direct sunlight off your tank. Also limit the amount of time your lights are on in your tank to around 8 hours a day... hope that helps

thanks for that help, i was having the same problem, a lot of what you said to avoid i was doing :look:

thank you for the advice, I am leaving my lights on all day and added to that the tank is still new and quite sterile.
Hopefully it will soon cycle and I can move on to some fish
