I'm looking to have some-one build me a stand for my 5Gal hex tank...However, they require detailed plans of what I want...And I know diddly-squat about designing plans for anything. Just the basic, rudimentary things I learned from various shop classes :D.

Has anyone built one before? If so do you still have plans that I could use for mine; and if not, is there anyone out there who could design me some? I've drawn out a very [very] rough idea of what it should be, so whenever I get home to my scanner I will try and post it.

It all depends on what you are looking for in a stand. The total weight of the tank will be around 50 pounds, support is no problem. Tank height, storage requirements, and appearance are.

With a small tank such as that, you do not need to build a stand that is hex shaped if you don't want. A square or rectangle stand would be easier to build, and would probably give you more options for storage & such.

Whats the size of the tank?

all you should have to give them is the tanks base sizes for example...

Then they should be able to build your stand for them measurements, unless they work at dopey r us

explaining how you want the stand should not need a full on design project lol, its as simple as, i want top and bottom in hexagon, and straight uprights with 1 shelf in middle.. obviously you will have to tell them how high you want the stand as well.

My very basic idea of what I want...

I would prefer to have a hex stand rather than square or rectangular one because of size needs.

~edit~ tank size is: 6.5in x 15in

ah i see you what you want, ok... give me your tank base sizes in mm not inches... (i dont understand your drawing full)

Right click this picture and save it, then edit it in paint with proper sizes and then re post it here for me, il do the design for you if you want. its up to you.

That is precisely what I was wanting...

In millimeters [unable to access photoshop at the moment]:

Side Length - 241.3

Side Height - 457.2

So is this basically what your base and heights are?

If so i can do you a design going by these

This is twice as good a drawing as I do for stands & racks, most of it is done in my head. I often just write down a few measurements and go to town. Never messed with any CAD sort of things, never had the need to, all old school.

That is as small a stand as I have ever seen, it should be dirt cheap to make a really nice one. Look into different wood trims & millwork to spiff it up, it has the potential to end up looking like a really nice little setup.

18 inches, not 15... 15 was just precon. idea of how tall I wanted it ( seeming as I didn't have the right measurements when I drew that up )

But , aside from that, yes. That's what I want.

That was the plan ;)

Why not go for something simple and easy to design, you can make this one here out of 8 pieces of wood easy.. and would take 5 mins to build once pieces cut.

1 x top (hexagon)
1 x bottom (hexagon)
2 x sides
1 x shelve
2 x doors
1 x back (thin wood needed only)

Here is what it would look like, obviously the real thing would look cool lol

Yeah, something like that would work mate. I didn't have my mind entirely set on one thing... I just need a stand, and I don't want/need a rect. or square one.

Well that one is so simple to make m8, the top and base is the same size as your tanks base, or a touch bigger if you wanted..

The sides you want is 18" high

Your basically just building a box with a shelf without the top and bottom on (a H shape), the hexagonal top and base then just screw to that :)
