After seen the 41" stand journal has inspired me to make these plans....

Will be a dark wood to match the Tv unit and table...

If you have any more ideas please feel free to comment..

It will be 4 main legs in the corners with 'braces' in the middle as i want to have an open bit in the middle for 'the wifes' bits..

any metal supports? might be an idea to include some (perhaps the legs and a cross diagonally under the tank as well)

No its all wood but the middle compartment will have sides which will add to strength.

This is what I built:
http://www.houstonfishbox.com/vforums/showthread.php?45252-I-made-a-stand
It's 48" wide and made with 2x4 and plywood construction. The top is 3/4" plywood, the bottom shelf is 1/2" plywood and the skinning is 1/4" plywood. I used poplar for the "trim". I left the bottom open for a sump, but I have 2 10 gallon tanks sitting on it for now. I have 2 20 gallon tanks on the top instead of the 55 I'd rather have. I put fluorescent strip lights under the top that you can't see. More than sturdy enough to support 10x the weight, but a little heavy compared to store bought.

EDIT: Try to understand that the thread had been hijacked by a troll insisting that it would collapse even though it is strong enough to support many thousands of pounds. All the "debate" was deleted by the mods so that's why you see some odd stuff in the remaining posts. The final results picture is at the end of the thread. The first post just shows some detail of the actual framework so that you can see how the weight is transferred to the floor.

In a bit of a rush as I'm getting a 4ft tank next week...First design is way to fiddly for my timeframe.

Thus this design.. tank = 48x15x12" the Blocks are 17x 8 1/2x 8 1/2"

They will be glued with industrial strength glue and screws and wall plugs joining the 3/4 inch plyboard panels then filler and paint to smooth the surface.
