New Tank .

What do I do first? Start with a full new cycle and when water is okay. add all the fish.???

Will pester LFS to test,
What fish do I put in first.
Or do I move all at once.???

Do I buy new fish Ie another silver shark to go with other two for new tank and more loaches to bring up a shoal. Say another 3 when putting them all in new tank Do I do this or do I let settle.


It will be too late if I leave and do in ignorance. Help AGAIN !!!! Please

If you do a fishless cycle (see below)......

.....then you can add pretty much all the fish at once as the tank will be prepared for a full bio-load (stocked tank). In fact if you dont add all of the fish, the bacteria that you have built up during the cycle will die off. Then you would have to add the remaining fish gradually.

As for the sharks, i will have to leave that to the more experience chaps and chapettes..

I know that they are gonna ask you the size of the new tank though.. so to speed up the process, post the size, then im sure somebody will help soon.

Jewel Rio 400

My plan was for my gibbiceps red which I at last found the name for, not a common plec sorry I can't tell the difference.


The two Clown loaches which will also use floor space ,the two silver sharks which will swim middle to surface and my one Golden Gouramis. Golden Gouramis I may keep in the small tank with the tetras, platy's and the guppies. On the other hand I may sell my little tank keep my neons and get rid of the tetras and guppies.

Hi Tetraqueen! If you're spending all that money on the RIo 400 (good on you!), then an extra 16 quid or so for a liquid test kit is hardly going to be noticeable, and it will be the best investment you can make! You don't want to have to depend on the lfs forever more. I would do a fishless and then add the fish once the cycle is complete.

I have got liquid test kit well its tablets and do check but they will not ususally allow fish unless my water stats are what they like.

They have been good. They will also take my fish back when too big. I will see how I get on twill be next year at this rate.

Never heard of that before but that's a good thing that they actually care about helping people. Even the true LFS around here will still pretty much sell you whatever you want and not ask any questions.

when i set up new tank i always use redeye tetres to start my filter then after 1 mouth or 2 i will add 6 to 10 fish a week.
