about how much do Plakats cost. I really want a big black male for my 55.

That depends on where you live and what you're looking for. I've bought 2 plakats from the lfs's close to me, and haven't paid more then $5. However, some of the plakats on Aquabid are $100+. A direct buy from a breeder would fall somewhere in the middle.

Black is a color that's pretty popular right now, and I know there are a number of lines being developed from/with black bettas currently. So if you're specific about what color you want, you can expect to pay a premium right now for black, would be my guess. Same thing for coppers and platinums. Same goes for Giants and half-Giants.

Plakat has so many type. Especially black one, there is melano or copper black. As for giant, they are real big and it will mature in 6 month and it is up to 3.75 to 4 inches long. I have a pair of 100% giant plakat. I am pairing him with a big red 180 degree halfmoon female with many rays. I hope to get 75% giant halfmoon plakat with more rays in the tail. If happens, I really like to see how the color will be. Cambodian and red maybe or marble.

Jim Sonnier states that Giants get up to 7", and Half-giants are 3.5".

At the Orlando IBC Convention in June, 2002 several very large Bettas were shown in class G4, Form and Finnage. There were two about 7 inches long and three or four about 3.5 inches long. Gene Lucas called the larger ones, 'Two-pounders!' A couple were long-finned but most of them were short-finned Plakats. The picture above shows the 3.5 inch one I purchased at the auction after the show.

I spawned him to a regular sized Plakat female (spawn#111002) and was rewarded with about 50% Half-Giants (3.5 inch) and about 50% regular sized offspring. Some photos of the offspring can be seen here.

Interestingly some of the Half-Giant offspring showed early rapid growth while only a couple looked normal until about 8 months of age and then had a growth spurt to Half-Giant size. All, however, had voracious appetites and ate much more food than their regular sized siblings. Some of the fully grown Half-Giant offspring are shown [at right].

Based on my limited observations to date I am thinking that the Giant condition is controlled by a single pair of mutated genes. It appears that offspring receiving both Giant genes from their parents should grow to about 7 inches in length. And it follows that heterogeneous offspring receiving only one Giant gene from their parents should grow to a length of about 3.5 inches. See the table below for expected results from spawnings with Giant Bettas.

WHAT 7" long? That is a monster betta. LOL I bought mine at bluebettausa and saying that it is 100% giant and supposed to be 3.75 yo 4" long. Now this one should be monster betta. :) Wou wou wou. By the way, 7" is too BIG for me! hahahaha LOL

My biggest monster is 2.7"

I want one of those 2 pounders

Where do I get one?

I've never seen one of those giant bettas, but I bet they're amazing! I can't even imagine!

Oh, and yeeviabetta, if you get around to breeding that blue butterfly in your signature... please send a male baby MY way...

A lot of the time when people buy giants they are actually getting half giants. The true giants are harder to come by and more expensive. Maybe someone can confirm this or correct me, but I believe Jim Sonnier is working on long finned giants

According to his website, he has a long finned half giant spawn going now. I'd guess maybe he could only find half-giants good enough to work with, and is working down to giant on the long fins, but that's total speculation.

I was guessing he started with giant plakats, bred in the long fins and then continued to cross back to giants untill they are 100%. I can just imagine how amazing they must be :hyper:

Oh yeah, duh. I'm sure you're right, that makes a lot more sense. So sounds like in the next year or so he should have a line of long finned giants.

A short finned half giant would suit me fine.

Imagine a 7" long Halfmoon or Crowntail.... WOAHHH.
