Unfortunately that is the reality of Thai culture. Betta fish are commonly used for fighting and it is viewed almost the same as boxing in the US. There is a lot of pride and dedication to the 'sport'.

That video is pretty graphic to fish enthusiasts ---- just a warning. You may want to make an edit before the link informing people of the graphic nature.

My advice, just don't read youtube comments in general.... it is a constant reminder of how stupid society is. Thanks for the heads up on this breeder.

As Remz says its very much part of Thai culture so is unlikely to be changed, a few breeders now recognize that fish hobbyists will pay for their Betta as pet fish, so it has reduced a touch but its unlikely to remove the sport.

As for youtube there are several graphic video's of fighting Betta, Im sure we could all find a video to post, and as it is sickening to those who love Bettas, perhaps we shouldn't let this turn into a "look how tiny this betta tank is" style posting marathon! Although I have to say the earlier vid of the live betta on a string was despicable.

Betta fighting is a gambling sport a lot like cock fighting or dog fighting... it's not going to go away. Fortunately the serious breeders take fairly good care of their fish most of the time and there are less horror stories than with dog fighting of appauling mistreatment. They are still out there though. Personally I don't like any animal fighting, because it is always done in an environment that removes any option for one of the contestants to refuse to fight or back down. That particular fight was allowed to go on much, much too long. Sometimes they remove the fish before they are badly injured but those poor plakats are absolutely shredded.
