I have a 60 litre tank with peaceful fish. I want something small and peaceful that will eat algae. I like seeing fish sucking the side of the tank glass when I go into the shops.

Which is best? A Pitbull Pleco or OTOCINCLUS? I have a PH of 7.4.

Pitbull Pleco's would be much more suitable, Otocinclus is suited to a larger tank due to its diet, which must consist of a limitless supply of algae, other wise they will just waste away and die.

Thanks I didn't know that. Are Pitbull Plecos peaceful? The name puts me off lol. Do they need any special things like some need bogwood?

Yes they're peaceful, it's recommended that they're kept in groups, I'd go for 4, not sure about the wood but I would put some in to be on the safe side, I'll try and find out for you.

I can't find anything on them requiring bogwood but I guess it wouldn't hurt to put some in anyway.

Sorry but that is just not fully true. IF you don't have enough Algae feed them fresh veggies. Mine took to zukeanie fast. I have 2 in a 10 Gal tank yes they like to be in groups. I find keeping 2 in a 10 gal works just fine. They are in a small tank so they always see each other. I now have plenty of Algae and snail eggs for them to eat. They always have full bellies. I had one that would eat Algae wafers but not all will eat prepared foods. Most will take Zukeanie.

They are delicate because they get easily stressed. Being moved around too much and rough handling can kill them. It's best to pick your oto up after they have been at the LFS for a week or so. if you wait the weak ones will die off sadly and the strong ones will be ready for the new home. I love my otos and they are honestly one of my Favourite fish.

The pit bull pleco is a fish I have always wanted they to like to be kept in groups. So I say go for it if you can. I have only seen a Pitbull pleco once in my life but I read a lot about them. Basically they are larger hardy otos.

All amazon sucker mouth cats like to rasp on wood. It is not needed for the pit bulls or Otos. I have a branch in and my otos do love it but I don't think they are really getting the wood fibbers maybe.

Zuchini is not a suitable as a staple diet, the algae is essential, the majority of Otocinclus are all wild caught, and that is why the majority of them die - starvation. Not all Otocinclus will take preprepared food.

I'm getting the pitbull plecos. I've phoned my lfs and they sre in stock so I'm off now to get them. I prefer som ething more hardy. The Otto sounds to delicate for me. Being a newbie I'd rather get the plec.

Hmm... mine were £9 a pair. I think you have been turned over big time there Marie, sorry to say. When I bought my first tank it can't with two oto's and they didn't survive very long, so probably the fact that they were moved and the fact I scrubbed the tank clean didn't do them any favours. My pitbulls are really active, they zip around the tank like a ballot that has just been let down. Really interesting little fish. I love mine.

I thought they were expensive. I got them from Maidenhead Aquatics which I've always found good but was surprised at the price.

Hi Marie,i`ve got 2 pitbull plecos ,mine were two for £9 too, from pets at home .I thought that they needed bogwood ,but they haven`t shown any interest in it whatsoever ,they`re lovely little things though ,did you get the brown or albino?

+1 my otto lives in a 60l and has a lovely little pot belly, he certainly isn't going to waste away anytime soon :)
