I was looking in my tank and one of my Pitbull Plecs. I think this one is a male was there chewing the wood and I thought 'that would make a cool pic'

And here 'he' is (Not too sure if male or female as the anal/pelvic ID is not so easy. lol)

and a closer view.

For size guidelines this pitbull is about 3 inches nose to tail so I think will be almost fully grown adult now.

In this pic you'll notice that the colouring of the skin is dark. I'll try take a pic when on sand, because then they change to a light sandy colour. Not just small colour difference, they really are chameleon fish. Dark Green and brown on wood or plant, and almost sand coloured on sand. Awesome little plec.

Nice fish, they are very good at changing colour aren't they, the change in mine when i changed my substrate was amazing! Does your bury himself in it when scared, makes me chuckle when i see that.

Wish i had got a couple more when i picked up my little guy, havne't seen them for sale since.

They never seem to bury themselves in the sand. They play in it a lot and send a load into the water to fall like snow. They tend to congregate at the front, totally oblivious to any outside activity.

Pleco Aquatics in Lincoln (also on ebay) brought approx 70 wild caught ones in, of which these are 4, but they are £9.50 each.

Thanks for all the nice comments ppl.

Ours are great at burying themselves :) I'll have to try and get a pic :)

As for the colour change, Like Mike - ours made a dramatic change when we moved them from a tank with light gravel into a tank with dark sand :)
I've got Pics I'll post up when I find them as I've left them on portable HD at work

(coley - turns out the eggs were the pygmy corys - I now have about a dozen tiny little dots flitting about in the shadows :))

Congrats on the corys SmithRC. I wish I had room for some more fish but I maxed out + 50% as it is. Oh well. I'll have to keep looking at other peoples pics. lol

I'm the proud new owner of a pitbull plec, and he seems VERY shy. you hardly ever see him during the day. He hides on the underside of my rock-structure, or in the cracks of my driftwood.

He will be shy because they are a fish that like to be in groups. I would go back and buy 2 more to keep him company, they tend to hang out together.

Thats my advice anyway

Heres a pic of mine having a chat
