hi i would love piranhas
i know they have to be alone so if i was to get a tank what size will be ok for 2 piranhas

Piranhas are a skittish species that do best in large groups. A single fish will stress out and die, 2 will fight and one will kill the other. You need a large tank, with subdued lighting and a lot of cover. If not, they will kill each other from stress related problems.

Your approach is wrong. It should not be how many in a what.

There are many species of "piranha". There is no simple answer because they all have thier own requirements.

They are a shoaling fish, so you should always aim to keep 6 or more fish. Checkout the species you are interested in, and what is available.

Once you have an idea of what species to keep, ask again. Your current question is on the same level as "what fish can I put in a tank".

Pirhanas are very hard to keep your gonna need quite a few and they are very sensitive to water changes etc, Its gonna take a lot of hard work to keep them sucessfully. Just hope you know what your getting into.

I imagine you may be asking these questions out of a general desire to learn more and maybe daydream a little; I know I use the forum in this way at times. I've asked about different tetras and gouramis and things I really cannot house at the moment- but it's nice to dream.... And always nice to learn more. I think that's a perfectly legitimate way to use the forum.

However, if you really are planning a new tank and can afford to get one, then remember that your first responsibility is to sort out your current fish who are living in less than ideal conditions (overstocked+shoaling fish kept on their own). If you could manage a new tank then they could have a really good life in proper shoals.

Heres an idea.
A mate of mine has got a 48UK Gallon tank with 4 red bellied piranhas in it.
They are healthy and fairly easy to look after. He was advised of gettin no more in his tank.

His water if perfect and he does 1 10% water change a week.

Great fun to watch at feeding time!!

they are really hard to keep ma bro wanted one and i told them what they needed and h totally went of da idea.

hey, i have six red bellies in a 100 gallon tank, they love it inthere, they have a mangrove at each end of the tank to hide under, and as said before feeding time is great.

i would recomend them, they are easy to keep, water changes every week but whats an hour os so a week for some beautiful fish???

:)

hmmmm piranhas are actually quite hardy fish................. and really not that hard to care for. If you want piranhas you looking at a minimum of a 75 gallon tank (except for wimple piranhas, check my ID in the fish profiles) I really cant reccomend a species for you but read up on them and if youre serious about them post some more questions........ youre kinda taking it the wrong way with "how many can i have in my tank"
