I have 2 RBP , one at 6 inches , one at about 5 inches, the larger of the 2 is quite dark red and the other is paler (healthy and active just pale in comparison) They are seperated in 2 30 gallon tanks and recently I've pushed the tanks together so they could see each other (because I will be reuniting them in a 50 gallon and I want to get them used to seeing each other)

Recently I've noticed that they will "dance" together with their noses together in their seperate tanks, the larger one is sick over my smaller one (he won't move, just stares at the smaller one longingly and won't move unless she comes close to him) They are both eating and active, their behaviour is just comically different.

My question is...does this sound like breeding behaviour and if so, would it be safe to reunite them as long as I removed any eggs/fry from the tank they will be rehomed in??

Thanks for any info as it's difficult to find info on RBP

Piranha are not cichlids mate there Characins you need to ask a mod to move this they are from the same family as tetras.

They're being territorial, if they were breeding they would turn almost black in color.

Piranhas will go to the edges of their territories and do that sideways dance to the others as a show of aggression to tell the others that this is his territory and stay out or else.

the larger one is sick over my smaller one (he won't move, just stares at the smaller one longingly and won't move unless she comes close to him)

Not sure how you can tell whether one is a female or not but I'm betting the larger one isn't looking longingly as in love but wants to get at the smaller one to show him who's boss.
