the last time i was in my LFS they had these amazing looking pink danios-im sure they were zebra but they were bright pink. has anyone seen these before? ive tried searching for them and im not comming up with anything.

i only have one zebra danio at the moment and was planning on maybe getting a pair to go with him? would it be best to stick to getting normal zebra danios to go with him, or would the pink ones be ok? they were the same size etc.

im popping into the fish shop tomorrow, so please advise if you can! :)

Any zebra danio will school with any other so they'd be fine. However, I'm not sure of what you are talking about. They could be dyed.
Or are you talking about these? http://www.5dtropical.com/images/fish/ftrf...glofishad03.jpg These are geneticaly modified to fluoresce. That can sound quite distasteful to many people but it's actualy not that big a deal (at least not in this aprticular case as the threat to wild populations is very limmited). You can read about them here: http://www.glofish.com/

BTW, danios do better in larger groups. Even if you don't get this particular type, it's a good idea to get at least 4 more to keep your existing one company. :)

Thanks for that-its definately the same fish from the first link that i saw in the shop. they are gorgeous looking-if they still have some in il definately get a few :D will go read the second link now!

Off topic here: i was wondering if someone can tell me how many fish i can have in my tank? its a little over 10 gallons and at the moment i have 1 balloon mollie(lost 1 today :( ), 1 zebra danio and 3 chain loach. how many more could i get in there? not that i want to crowd it, but i had my heart set on getting a few amano shrimp and perhaps eventually a pair of ADF's. does this sound like too many along with a few extra danios? i really dont want to over crowd and will wait for my froggies if i need to! infact, i may even try and talk my fiance into getting me a smaller tank for some frogs ;)

Do you know what killed your molly? It is a good idea to make sure there are no diseases in your tank before buying any new fish. If it is a mystery, The death could just be from not having salt (but don't add salt now for the other molly because of the loaches).

If you think your tank is healthy it would probably be fine to add four like sylvia said. I'm not sure if they treat regular danios the same as themselves or not but my guess is that they would. In my area they have green and yellow ones as well but the red ones are nicest if you ask me. Still not quite my taste but very interesting.

I would hold off on the frogs since you have the chain loaches so the bottom of the tank is already occupied. I have not kept that particular species of loach before (I assume you're talking about sids?) but from what I've been told by some people who have them, they are too active for a 10 gallon to be big enough for them. I would not trust them with shrimp, either, but I guess you could try if it is heavily planted. It might end up being just an expensive meal, though.

HTH.

well i came home with 5 gorgeous pink zebra danios today :D i shall try and get a piccie of them later because they really are beautiful. they're getting on fine with my other Danio, and they seem to be sticking with him so alls good it seems!! shop didnt have any amano shrimp :( so will have to see if they have them elsewhere.

Tammyliz: it may well have been lack of salt that killed the mollie-i got the mollies a while back, before i knew they needed salt, and it was too late then as i already had other fish in with them :/

the chain loach were actually recommended to me on this forum for my size tank, and they are doing well in it too. if i were to get shrimp id be making sure i get the largest amanos i can, and will also provide more "shelter" for them. :)

TammyLiz - yes, chain loaches are sids :)

I'd say that the 6 danios, molly and 3 chain loaches probably just about fully stock your tank. Having said that, shrimp don't realy take that much space or produce much waste so you can add a few amanos. I wouldn't get the frogs though.

Thanks for that Sylvia-my tank does look pretty perfect right now! hope i can get hold of a few amanos soon!

Kilultagh: i got my danios from Erdington Aquatics, in Erdington(obviously lol) are you local? im trying to find more fish shops in the area but not having much luck :/

and YAY for glofish! :D lol what colour are yours vancouver? thing is, mine definately look more pink then red. il try and get a photo of them, though im not sure how good it will!

it's legal to sell Glofish in the US, and I don't know about Canada, but last I checked, it was illegal to sell them in the UK and fish labelled as Glofish are likely dyed.

Real ones or dyed fakes?

As of June 2006 genetically modified fish have yet to be licenced for sale or import into the UK. Anybody selling genuine GM fishes is breaking the law at the current time.

There are lots of pink Zebra danios around that resemble Glofish. Some shops are selling these danios and claiming that the fish are genetically modified organisms. If this were true, the dealers would be liable to serious prosecution.

They are quite likely to be dyed through injections and we would urge shops not to stock them and fishkeepers not to purchase them.

Illegal to sell safely genetically modified fish but perfectly okay to sell dyed fish? Something fishy about that. Too many people are ignorant over what "genetically engineered" means and too unconcerned about what happens with dyeing.

I completely agree...that seems off. A lot of things are off with laws--in any country, though.

There is still a chance that they could be the actual genetically engineered thing and that they were captive bred in the UK by someone who acquired a few of them. I hope thats the case. It seems like injecting them so the color is over the whole body would be very difficult to do, not to mention disgusting. I could imagine them dipping them, but I'm not sure how they'd get them to fluoresce that way. :/

Fish-Girl, do you have a way to post pictures of the ones you have? If they are good enough quality pictures, I'd be able to tell you if they look exactly like the ones here.

speaking of "off", from the same article:

"Accordingly, our fish are able to breed just as any other Zebra fish. At the same time, we encourage people to remember that their sale is covered by a substantial number of patents and related intellectual property. Because of this, any breeding and subsequent sale of the fish is prohibited."

"No! bad genetically mutated danios! Don't you know you are patented and intellectual property? Stop breeding this instant!"

:S

If anyone is concerned about a sudden proliferation of genetically modified pets, that above is going to be a major factor in why you won't see it happening any time soon with other animals. If people can reproduce (literally) your modified pet, they won't have to pay for your over-priced pets and get them instead cheaper from a breeder. That above all else will restrict the profit margins of those who'd use or misuse genetic engineering for pets. And if it's not profitable, it won't be done.
