Ok I know this has been asked probably 100 times over, but I never had cons before so I never read it. :*) My female laid her eggs in an overturned clam seashell, and there are about 100 or so of them. Now,my question is,can I take them out to hatch in another tank,or leave them to hatch and THEN scoop them out? I have other fish in there, this is my first ever cichlid spawn and I want to get into it. I know I know,it's cons...but I just don't have the heart to let them get chomped. She's blowing water on them with her mouth,it's so cute!! :) Please guide me through. :)

just leave em... let the parents defend them... they will get more vicious but if your tank is big enough things should be ok....

i had 3 pairs of cons and a pair of firemouths in a 20 gallon and 1 pair of them bred..... 3 of the babies survived and are now about 1cm...

convicts are great parents so leaving them is probably the best idea.. but its up to you.. if you take them away once theyve hatched... the parents might go crazy so my advice is leave em... but not sure how big tank is and what else is in it :X

Ok,I'll leave em in there. How about a divider in between them and everything else? I only have 3 other fish in with them. That wouldn't stress them out terribly, would it? The shell is right in the front in the corner, won't be hard to slide one in...What ya think?

shes just fanning the eggs and keeping fungus off. if they turn brown they are fertile, if white they have fungas. you can take the fry out when they become freeswimmers. thats about 3-7 days roughly

if the tank is big enough things should be ok.... id jus leave em... u could divide them if u want.... not sure what youd do with 100 babies but its up to u :D

Oh man, they were ALL brown except like 7 of them. I'm going to try to scratch up another tank,if I can't find everything I'm just ganna leave them. I'm sure after this,I'll learn my lesson about how hard it is to get rid of con fry. I have to get into just once. :shifty:

its okay, you can use them as feeders. just make sure they dont escape and grow up in a community tank ;)

Trust me, the parents will defend them from the other fish. No need to divide them. The other fish won't even go near them. Besides, don't you want to see the parents take care of em? that's all the fun.

I still have 30 of my fry yet. They are getting big and i need to do something with them

the parents might also harm the other fish though. and if you are experienced in taking care of the fry you can probably save a lot more

That's true. WHat are the other 3 fish in the tank? They might be able to hold up on their own if they are fast and/or tough

Congrats! If you take out the fry, however, you'll miss out on the greatest part of having cons, which is to watch them herd their fry around the tank looking for food, while defending them from other fish. I always smile when my male con comes gills-a-flaring when I put my face close to the tank, while the female scoops up the fry in her mouth to put them back in their little cave.
