Can anyone ID this species for me?

Crenicichla_venezuela.jpg

I picked one up yesterday, and quite surprisingly, he's actually befriended my Giant Danio.

There are quite a few Crenicichla species around these days and some do have the caudal spot. I think those are definately juveniles and the adult colouration will differ somewhat to what we see in your pic. Perhaps someone in the cichlid secton would be more qualified to point you in the right direction.

P.S. Crenicichla sp. Venezuela

They look like juvinile Crenecichla strigata.

again definatly lugubris pikes. and it isn't surprising that he befriended the danio as juviniles these fish are actually very very very "friendly" the almost seem to need contact with other fish. but don't be fooled they do grow HUGE and they have even bigger appities. the danio will become dinner. if it isn't killed for pleasure first.

as to the ID well I don't think that it is SP. Venzuela see this article.

note that in your pic the lack of the mid line. also the cadual spot is way too pernounced to be sp. Venzuela

EDIT:

Crenicichla Strigata might be the better guess as to the species of pike that you have.

but since it is very late in the night here its actually just turned the new year about 2 hours ago I will have to look into it later.
