8" Pictus swimming in circles day & nite against glass for 4 days since cleaned & reset 69 gal tank per picts. Think he is stressed. I know I am. So I keep tank covered during day. Up all last nite to check on him. How do I reduce stress? Water perfect. Same gouramis in tank, since he was introduced 1.5 years ago at 3". Any suggestions?

Welcome to TFF.

There are two separate issues here. The first is any substance in the water that arrived during the last water change...any additives? Did you use the conditioner? Worth mentioning, but this would likely affect other fish too and I gather this is not the case.

So the primary reason is probably the fact that this species (Pimelodus pictus) is a shoaling fish and it must have a group. It should be kept in a small group of at least 5; single fish may pine away and this is most likely what you are now seeing. The solitary fish is stressed, severely so, and can no longer "hold" this in, so the erratic behaviour. This unfortunately is not reversible, as the fish has been compromised for quite some time and it affects them internally/mentally.

As gouramis are present, I should also point out that tankmates should not include sedate fish like angels, discus, gourami and even cichlids as these will be pestered by the nocturnal habits of this catfish, nor nippy fish like barbs. Medium-sized characins, larger rasbora, rainbowfish are suitable.

Any chance of a short 20 second video of the fish?

If the video is too big for this website, post it on YouTube and copy & paste the link here. We can view it at YouTube. If you are using a mobile phone to take the video, have the phone horizontal so the video takes up the entire screen. If you have the phone vertical, you get video in the middle and black on either side.

How did you clean and reset 69g tank?
and what is "per picts"?

The Pictus has been in the tank for over a year with a cory since it was 3", getting along nicely with the gouramis. Yes I have used the same water conditioners as always no changes, no other additives. No new plants or decorations.

Tank was vacuumed and plants cleaned with a 20% water change. All other fish ok. I took Pictures, so I could reset the tank exactly as before

did you use a bucket specifically for the fish?

is the fish eating?

Fish were in tank as always. Everything done exactly the same as always. Not eating.

Your video isn't working :(

If the fish aren't eating, I would do another water change.

I would change 50% of the tank water and gravel clean the substrate.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

If you don't want to do a water change, add some Activated Carbon or Highly Activated Carbon to the filter and see if that helps.
