Would this work? My oscars are about 3 inches long and my pleco is about 5 inces long. They are in a 120 gallon tank. I tried adding silver dollars with my oscars and it didnt work very well. One of my oscars tried to eat him...he got out of my oscars mouth but died the next day. Just wondering because I like pictus cats. I already have one in my 55 gallon tank....Thanks for any advice!!!

all i can give is my thoughts buddy on what i would do.

(DEPENDS ON WHICH PICTUS????????????? )

i would say do not bother because the oscars are going to grow like mad and will try and eat the pictus cats which in turn could hurt the oscar if the spines get stuck in the side of his mouth as he trys to get him in ..

on the other side of things i would say yes if you are talking about the OTHER pictus which gets to roughly two foot long and is ofton confused with the marble catfish,

hope this is of some use to you

What is the scientific name of this fish then? I have never heard of another species of "pictus" catfish though there are many species of Pimelodus.

Oscars and Pimelodus pictus will not mix, as said the oscar will try to eat the pictus cats which will result in the catfish becoming lodged in the mouth or throat of the oscar and will probably kill both fish. You would be better off looking at one of the larger Pimelodus species such as Pimelodus albofasciatus or Pimelodus ornatus which grow to around 10-12 inches.

CFC, I think he means Leiarius longibarbis or Leiarius Pictus? Which are not another type of Pimelodus pictus but are another member of the Pimelodidae family. :)

Ah of course, should have known that really since i have one  Just didnt register since they are not commonly seen in the shops and im sure that with the high price tags they carry most people would make sure they knew what fish they were buying

Anyway Bomag i stand corrected

hi there again yes the fish i meant was leiarius pictus/ sailfin marbled catfish

or perrunichthys perruno / reticulated catfish
(round here there are called marble catfish) yes i no i said the other name of pictus was marble but round here the 2nd is called marble catfish.

i have the 2nd one which is growing like mad have had him since he was 1" 1/2 long when i got him four weeks ago, and know he is 5" long could not belive it when i saw him one night via night vision.

as for him not being a pictus i am sorry but i have always called the first one a large pictus (hands up sorry for the miss understanding)

got a new post up in odd balls if you could answer my question please
