(he has this awesome blue coloring when the light hits him a certain way)
him or her... no idea what sex it is

If we are to be honest, the tank is very clean and very empty. Try getting some tall plants for the background flanked with medium and small plants and a piece of driftwood or bogwood. Driftwood can be any size, large or small.

ive been waiting for payday (tomorrow) and trying to decide if i wanted to theme my tank or not pretty much.

I'd say driftwood and plants...

Amazon Sword to the right, in front of the heater - just to block the view a bit.

Anacharis planted along the back left to block the filter.

Anubias or Java Fern on top of the driftwood or cave.

Also, I would say that the focal point should be offset to one side or the other, rather than dead center. Have you heard of the golden ratio? 1:1.7

I'd shift the cave to the left, more in front of the filter and add some driftwood behind it vertically to add some height.

where can i find plants like the ones youve listed? like what store?

and no i have not heard of 1:1.7

The plants I listed should be available in any LFS. They are extremely common, quite hardy and available to be seen in the picture of my tank, in the sig.

Anacharis is the bunch of stems to the left side. The Amazon swords are planted here and there around the back, and the anubias are on the driftwood (I also have a bunch of anacharis stuck in the rock there.

I chose these plants because they were readily available, grow in low-tech set-ups in low light conditions and were actually quite cheap. The Amazon swords were between $7 and $3, depending on the sizes (you can get 2-4 in a pack). The anubias were $6 each. And I got the bunches of anacharis (roughly 8-12 stems per) for $3. These are all considered "beginners" plants.

Have a read through this. (BTW, I got the ratio wrong... its 1:1.6) Basically it means the focal point should be just over 1/3 of the way across the tank, not dead center, and it should be about 2/3's towards the back of the tank. (Please note: I didn't exactly follow this to the letter with my scape yet, but when the plants start to grow in, I think it will match it more closely and make for a more interesting looking scape.)

just wanted to update with some newer pics
all the plants that ive added are live. (man im really glad i got driftwood as a helpfull element for the plecos, but moreso because i really really like how it looks)

im thinking i probably wont add many more plants, although id really like to find something that floats

It looks good!

If you want a floating plant - Anacharis is also a floating plant and thrives that way as well, if you are interested in that. Depending on your light, there are many other options as well.

What type of snails are they?

they are golden mystery snails (or so labelled in petco)

im wondering if theyll eat all my plants lol

and interesting so you just let anacharis float and it keeps growing ?

and my light is a 20 watt T8 sunglow bulb do you think that will be sufficient? (20 watt is the max for my hood)

You can let them just float around, or leave the band on and leave them at the bottom, but not submerged in the substrate.

ianho stated about those plants:
this plant is bomb proof, it will grow anywhere, in or out of the substrate what ever you choose. A good plant for a new set up as it'll use excessive ammonia and nitrite really well.

well i visited a lfs i just discovered and got a gold ram and a little more anacharis (which doesnt really float on top but works lol) .

going to pick up 1 german blue ram and i think my tank will be done, (going to add some more neon tetra later but want my tank to adjust to the rams first)

will update with pics after word

Did you remove the weighted band?
