I'm starting to suffer quite a lot with brown algae on my live rock and I'm assuming it’s due to excessive phosphate. I'm planning on confirming this on Saturday when I get a chance to get a test.

I'm not running a sump at the moment and it’s not really an option for me right now. I'd prefer to try and use the internal filter box of the Rio 125 before shelling out on a canister filter, I can get carbon media without issue but it looks like juwel don't supply phosphate stuff.

Question is can you buy the media in a little baggy and I could use in the filter box? Would it be enough to just have a carbon sponge and bag of phosphate remover media in there?

i know you could buy the bag on its own, im gonna get some cheato and one of these bags soon and hang it over my powerhead

pretty sure my phos is only 0.03 but 0 is better :good:

fluval sell phosphate remover but not sure it'll fit, you could buy and put it in your own bag though?

That's what I'm thinking going to have to do some searching I think!

I bought a bag ready for my carbon and will do the same for phosphate remover.

Very well made bags.

Go for an Iron(II) Oxide phosphate remover and put it in a filter sock and place it somewhere like in a filter or sump.

the fluval ones should fit in there easily. they sell the carbon and phos remover in packs of 3. you could probably fit all 6 in there if you took out the media. you could also try rowaphos. iv just switched over to this. the larger tub comes with its own bag but im not sure if the smaller one does. nitrates also encourage algae so id probably add some seachem nitrate remover or alternative too. should clear it up fairly quick if you have all 3 in there, enough cuc and keep up your water changes.

Ah so the fluval media will fit in a similar way to the juwel ones?

yeah they come in small bags. its around £7 a box of 3. i think 1 does 100l and should be changed every 6 weeks but i put 2 in and they lasted around 3 months before they stopped working and algae started to grow on the bag. rowaphos lasts a bit longer from what iv heard thats why i changed.

It doesn't sound like a phos problem to me tbh.

The brown sounds like diatoms caused by a mini cycle from newly introduced LR or an area of the tank with little flow and lack of oxygen!
