Hi

A few weeks back, I had a little whitespot trouble. I had my water tested and everything came out ok. I can't provide exact figures as my dad took the sample down for me. He said the pet shop owner said they were good results and everything was fine.

When the whitespot happened I was told to put salt in. I didn't have aquarium salt but was told normal salt would do (not sure if this was a good idea). Once the whitespot had cleared, I had another testing session. All tests again were really good. Nitrate, nitrite and ammonia were 0. However the pH was 8.0 (I had put the salt in plus protazin). The petshop owner told me to do 2 25% water changes within a few days of each other. I did this, but did one the same day and then the other a week later (probably should have done it sooner but......).

About a week later I had another test done. Again Nitrates etc etc 0. pH 6.0. This was a different pet shop. The girl told me to do 2 10% water changes in 3 days. I did one that thursday night, and the second saturday night. Monday I had it tested again. Nitrates etc etc 0. pH was 7.2-7.4.

My question is wat is going on with the pH and what effects water changes have on it, seeing as it dropped to 6 the first time and up to 7.4 the second.

Also I know this pH is a little high. Wwhat can be done to reduce it a little (without adding checmicals).

first off, you need to stablise you ph with some ph buffer by the sounds of it
Not until the kH is know or what in fact the pH really is. Don't add anything to the tank without knowing exactly what you are dealing with.

You need to get your own test kit for ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. It will be about £15 for a master test kit by API from Petsathome. I find it very odd that you have no nitrate - most tanks have at least some. Remember Nitrate only really becomes an issue when it's pushing 50 over an extended period of time (for your average community setup). My tapwater nitrate is anything up to and around 40 ! A lot of people have nitrate in the 20's (absoltuely safe) .
