Ph question

i just changed to sand yesterday.........it looks great and the fish look/act happier...my question is....my Ph shot up to 8.8 from 7.0.....is that normal for it to do that? my tank is still in the middle of cycling and since i did the change the ammoonia is now 0... ....nirtites are up there yet though....but anyway...is it normal for the Ph to go up like that with a sand bottom?

What kind of sand did you use?

If it is a coral containing sand then your pH will go up.

i got it at lowes.....its playground sand....and it seems to be helping speed up the cycle...as the next day, my ammonia is now 0....(nitrites are high yet, but it's getting there)
