Is it nomal to get a drop in PH in a new tank. I've heard of PH swings but just curious if it was a result of doing a water change with different water. (changed to RO from tap). yesterday it was 8.3 and today it is 7.3 , will it come back up on it's own?

thanks.

7.3 seems very low to me when you did your water change with fresh saltwater did you make sure it was well mixed and the sg was correct before adding it to your tank? normally when i do my water change my ph rises up to about 8.2 then drops down to about 7.9 as the week goes by

i would keep a close eye on your tank stats if your ph doesnt rise you may need a ph buffer

yeah the SW was well mixed and I checked the SG with my refractometer. The PH was good until I switched water sources. I'll check again tonight and see where it's at. Thanks for the reply

Just did a few water tests and here are it seems like the Ph is coming back up:

ph-7.9
amn-0
nitrate-0
nitrite-0
alk-250ppm

I also checked the ph of:
tap-8.0
RO-7.5

being as the RO ph is low, will I have this problem with every water change? also the RO water is from a different city being as I live in a smaller town and can't find an RO source without buying a home unit.

normally as far as i'm aware the salt you add to your ro water buffers your ph back up i might be wrong though :/

Actually, you can't measure the pH of good RO water. In RO water there should be very few dissolved solutes (2-3ppm or less) and thus you could get pH readings of anywhere from 6-9 for RO water depending on the sample you take. Adding salt mix to RO water contains all the solutes that raise the pH. Salt mix is more than just salt, there's calcium, carbonate, bicarbonate, stronium, iodine, magnesium, and others in there that all help bring the pH up. Seeing pH swings within the first couple days of a tank's life is normal, as is lower pH for new tanks once things settle down.
