Its probably a daft question but I was just wondering will a soil ph meter read the ph levels of aquarium water.

A local shop I was in the other day has reduced the price and I was wondering if it would work even if it just gave a rough reading.

Yes, I don't see why this wouldn't work, as soil pH probes are reading the pH of the water in the soil. The pH probe measures the concentration of H3O+ (H+). pH is a logarithmic scale that relates the relative concentrations of hydronium (H3O+) to hydroxide (OH-) in water. At pH 7 they are at equal concentrations basically cancelling each other out [ H3O+ + OH- = 2 (H20)].

I would make sure to get some buffering solution to make sure the calibration is spot on, as in my experience even the good meters that I used to use in my lab would drift over time and need to be recalibrated.
