Ok i will be going to set up a 75 gal tropical tank.. maybe with some easy plants and moss balls..

I want to know.. is a ph of 7.6 to high? thats my tap water after 2 days in a bucket..

cause every where i've read says tropical fish should be in 6.8-7.4..

any help and suggestions?

also i will have some LFS bought driftwood in the tank which should soften and low ph a bit.. (tannin)

also does ph lower when fish a present in the tank or when tank cycles? or is that a stupid question lol..

Thanks!!

I do not know exactly how or why PH levels drop or rise (I'm sure someone else can answer that for you. However they definately say that Bogwood lowers it. They also say that messing about with PH (upper and downer treatments) is not a good idea.

I have found that mine PH found its own level of 7.2 after cycling and seems to have stayed there. My link Tank Cycling may help for you to see when and at what stage my PH levels changed at the beginning before stabilizing.

I don't know if this helps much - Hope so - Good Luck and let us know how you get on. :D :D

Your driftwood will release a certain amount of tannic acid, which will lower the pH of the water. The effect wont be as much as you'd expect from bogwood and provided you soak it well before entering it into youur aquarium, you should be fine. Your pH of 7.6 is fine for most fish, as long as yu don't want to breed them. There are many fish (such as most live bearers) that will actually prefer a pH of around this level.
