I thought I'd start a new thread with this question which was raised in my earlier post.

Because when ammonia is in solution it is weakly acidic I wonder if anyone has noticed pH problems when doing a fishless cycle?

Thanks.

Even if there was a pH drop it would not cause a problem as there are no fish!! So I am not sure I understand your question?

Edit: I just realised that Ammonia should cause it to rise as its a base.

Even if the ammonia does not cause the ph drop, which It probably wouldn't in the amounts we use it, the bio-filtration process does cause it to drop.

Thanks for the replies. I was forgetting that by the time you add the fish, all the ammonia will be degraded.

Sometimes I just over complicate things in my head! :S

When I tested my water after starting my fishless cycle, the pH was extremely high instead of low. My normal tank pH runs about 6.6 to 6.8 while tap water is 6.8 to 7.0. The first time I check mey new tank, the pH was approaching off the scale and registered 7.8 on my high pH kit. I haven't tested it since then because as someone said, there aren't any fish in the tank. I will check again today when I test for ammonia.

I do that all the time :D and then go :hyper:

Give it an hour or 2 to simmer and then it settles down
