Is there anyone here that has or is educated on finches? I have some questions.

Just finches in general, zebras I guess. Not expensive ones.

they like mice, they breed like them, hang a baskett in the cage, and let them get on with it,bengalese, are nice too, brown and white, keep them with your zebras good luck,,kenny

Actually, I have a whole thing to ask you. See, my grandfather lives all alone in a retirement home and kind of has no friends anymore (he is 90 years old) . Everyday he is very depressed and lonely, he just wants to see people or something move around. Out of no where he told me he wants to get birds. He said he will watch them all day and knowing him, he will for hours on end. The problem is, he is very old and isnt very responsible. He cant do many things regarding a pet. I didn't want him to get a bird because it is more than just giving seeds and water but he seems so excited about it, calling everyday, asking when we will get them. He wanted parakeets because of their color but they need more care. I'm going to try to discourage parakeets if I am going to get him finches. He basically needs a bird where all he has to do is put in seeds and water everyday and change the newspaper every week. I researched some stuff and I am thinking finches might be his best bet. He doesnt want to take the birds out of the cage at all, just watch them. But can he have finches where all he has to do is give prepackaged seed food, water, and change the bottom of the cage every week?

finches would be good as would a single canary or budgie they all would need seed water cuttlefish and grit as well as fruit and veg once a week for a treat but they do need it millet sprays are also good
regards scot :)

Yeah, my grandfather only wants parakeets. He wants two, should I be getting a certain two genders so they won't fight? What are the fruit and veg you can feed them? I don't know if my grandfather will feed them fruits and vegetables... What is millet spray? Also how much seed should you give a day for two birds? Do parakeets make a lot of noise?

Also, would a canary be easier to take care of than parakeets?

if you get a cock bird canary,he will sing all day long, fed and watered once a day he will be really happy,a budgie, will learn to talk,a mail has blue on the top of his beak a hen has brown, its the sear on there nose a sponge like thing, they take really no looking after, your grandfather does need a bit company been on his own,and it would give him something to do,hope he gets, sorted,,kenny

It is nearly impossible in my experience to get a budgie to talk if you have two of them.

This may sound rude but are you going to take care of the birds if your grandad passes away or gets bored with them? Budgies can live for around 10 years and although totally possible its unlikely that someone of age 95-100 is going to be able to take care good care of the birds. Just something to think about..

Yeah, I did consider it. That is why I didnt want him to get parakeets at first. He won't get bored of them though. He has nothing to do everyday. He can't go anywhere, he is always stuck at home.
