i think one of my zebras is pregnant its definatly a female and she is very fat ive only noticed it the last couple of days IF she is pregnant what should i look out for how long till she lays how many eggs is she likely to lay? how long till the fry hatch?

Hi, its odd you say that because I cam home tonight to find one Danio with a rather large stomach, not showing sings of illness but looking pregnant, mind you I suppose they must swell with eggs which would look the same!

Hope mine don't spawn also because I wont have room, will ask LFS if they adopt ha ha xxx

fyi; egg laying fish can not be pregnant, they are gravid

so whats gravid? the site didnt help lol

grav·id (grăv'ĭd) adj.
Carrying eggs: a gravid uterus; a gravid female.
[from Latin gravis, heavy.]

I don't know what you are wanting to know.
females can lay upto 700 eggs, eggs hatch within 24hrs of being fertilised by the male.
if this hapens in a 'community' tank the eggs and/or fry are almost always devoured by all the fish.

i want to know what signs i should look out for wether shes pregnant or not she could be just fat?!

a gravid female will look very rotund, more than usual.
she may start to chase the male(s) in the tank to encourage them to spawn.

That is very helpful to know, because my female was chasing the male and so I thought maybe she was just fat as you would expect the male to chase the female if you don't know these things! That is very exciting news am loving this website xxx

make sure you haven't been overfeeding and not realizing it, or only watching your fish when you feed them. this is because they will have full round stomachs of course, and can be mistook for preggos :)

that being said, ive got 30+ danio fry in their own tank right now, 2-3 days old :)
