How many times does it take for them to raise a successful brood.
Mine have laid 2 large batches of egg within 2 weeks but they have eaten them both time!
Also will they lay ever week now that they have paired?

Cheers!

Okay, before we start with your jewels. We need to de- stock your tank. You tank is only 26 us gallons. You have waaayyy to many fish in there. You need to get rid of those severums, they need alteast a 55 gallon tank, around 225 litres. I would also get rid of the Plec, as he needs at minnimium, 55g ( 225 litres0< but even then that can be too small for him, assuming he is a common plec. What kind is he? Also, a pleco would be more than happy to eat any fishes eggs and fry. Plus, you have both a pair of Kribensis and Jewels in there? I would not suggest that what so ever. Jewels are slighly more aggressive than Kribs and would not be nice to them if they can get a brood of babies to lice. Plus, that is in my oppinion, and probably others as well, to small for both species. Plus, that firemouth shouldnt be in there either. They are from 2 different continents, and firemouths are less agrresive than both Kribs and Jewels and firemouths get bigger, needing a larger tank. Now assuming you only have those Jewels in that tank, where they can properly raise there young, would greatly increase the chance of them not eating them. As if there is room in the tank, the babeis have somewhere to go. Also, it can take many times for a pair to learn to take care of thier young. Mine are on there second try and have 100's of babies everywhere, and are taking great care of them. I once had a pair of Convict Cichlids( from South America) and they took good care and rasied there babies on their first try, and didnt have to rasie again. I only spawned them once, as they were such good paretns, i didnt have room for more babies.

This just shows how shop lie to you to make you buy fish. You learn loads on here by people like you...

I am removing the pair of krib in my larger tank and replacing them with the pair in the 100L tank. Also I have moved my firemouth and Severum to the larger tank for the time being but they are only babies so should have planty of room I guess. When I brought my plec I was told it was a common plec but now i'm not so sure. I have had him for around 2 years feeding him on algae wafers but he is still only 2 inches.

I really want a giant tank to hold these fish but dad has only just brought me one

Cheers for the advice!

That is a common pleco, he either needs to be taken back, or put in a BIG tank. Also, are your jewels really that white? Mine a a deep red like this:

That's certainly not a common Plec you have there - wrong markings and certainly wrong tail and fin shape. Could be one of the many Peckolita species, which stay much smaller although a 26 gallon is still probably too small to house one permanently.

Have a look though the species list (L numbers) here:

Be careful though - there are dozens of species that look similar to your fish. Might be worth posting here in the Plec forum aswell as a definate ID is very important with these kind of fish. :good:

Here's a good pic of a common Plec:

Note the much smaller, darker markings and smaller, less pronounced dorsal fin - if you look closely you'll see there is quite a difference when compared to the fish posted for id here.

The problem is there are loads of Peckolita and Hypancistrus species (and others) that could match this fish.

I would seriously reccommend posting those pics in the Plec forum here - there are plenty of knowledgable Plec keepers around who should be able to help. :good:

Ok, he is nothing like that, i must admite.
I have posed it on the plec forum. Most people say hes a common plec! I just don't understand why hes so small.. he hasn't always been kept with cichlids, i used keep him in a community tank with about 4 guppies and a small shoal of tetras for about 1 and a half years, in the 100L tank, so thats not likely to stunt his growth is it?

Cheers for the help tho!

After 2 years a common Plec would be at least 5-6", stunted or not. Your plec is 100% not a common - his markings are actually much closer to a sailfin's but he's not that either as they get even bigger.
