penguin 330 on a 55

ok i am in the process of seting up a 55 gal, im a rookike and doing wel on my 20 gal (see sig) anyway today my peng 330 came fed x. im planning on using it on my 55, i plan on having all small fish no plecos plecostmus or any big ones like that , lota tertas + lil guys , anyway i read every thread here on hdwe, i se alot of info on filters. with what im putting in tank (prob 50 small fish) wil the peng do the job? honestly now lol cuz that what i got and hate to chg now, but i wil be setting it up gradulaly in next few weeks, i se its rated for 70 gallons i really hope this wil work il be crushed if it dont........my 170 is absoulty a dream on the 20 gallon long always crystal clear, i have the 20 set up now almost 5 wks and plan on doing my 1st water chg this wk end, its always crystal clear hope i get same results in the 5 -330 set up? plz advise i really appreciate it ALASKA? what on your 45? thx guys-gals HELP!!!!!!!!! LOL

Most people will probably tell you that filter is way too small for a 55.

However, for what it's worth, I ran a Penguin 170 on a 46g bowfront for over six months, and in my case, it most definitely did the job well enough. That tank is pretty heavily planted, though, so that may have helped.

So, from my experience, the answer to "is a Penguin 330 large enough for a 55g tank?" would have to be "probably, but aquariums differ so much, it's tough to tell without trying".

ya thats what i was steering towars to. im gonna try it any other opinoins are apprecitaed. cuz when i feed or disrupt the btm moving stuf in my 20 the 170 gets it crystal clear aghain in like 30 min NO LIE and 170 means it turns or pumps, 170 gallon per hr. *turning tank water over 8.5 times* the 330 on a 55 will pump and turn over 330 gallons (6 times per hr) this would seem to be suffiecent to me i hope!!! i really like these filters and hate to chg but i wil if i have too, keep the veiws comin + wil se what hapenes, i wont even be fuly set up to the 1st or so of april, im doing this in steps cuz my girlfriend freaks on the $$ i been spending on my new obsession, ans she needs a $80 bikini from victorias secert (she throw in my face every time fed x pulls up!!!!) work with me here guys -gals lol its tough being a bartender + an aquairist and a lover lmao!!!!!

Im running a 330 with a 170 on a 90g tank. You wont be overfiltering, but a 330 on a 55g will do the job. The two BIO-Wheels make up for its comparably low GPH rate. Good luck, and buy that bikini!

I think that in a few months you would need to add another filter. I ran an AC 300 on a 55 for about 5 months before it started to get cloudy. It may be because i had large dirty fish, 2 channel cats, 2 plecos, and cichlids. Its worth a try. Whats the worst that could happen?? You have to add another bio-wheel 330 in a few months.. thats ok.. Good Luck!!!

wel yesterday (fri) it was beaitiful here in western new york i cruzed around with the top dwn in the mustang GT and went to several pet stores in the city lol it was 74 here!!!!! lol anyway i picked al the LFS guys brains (of course they wanted to sel me another filter) but i actually think il grab another 330, i get um online for 23.99 hell thats tip $$$ lol and my fish deserve *the best drinks!!! lol* maybe i shoulda just went with an emperor, but i have the one 330 now in the box + guess il grab another, that way i can knock out the plastic on the hood uniformly right off the bat..tho 330;s should be a mean set up no??? ok new question lol SHOULD I PLACE THE HEATER IN CTR BTWM THE 2 INTAKES? or where should i place intakes? I WAS THINKING EA. END HEATER IN MIDDLE? i have time too guys/gals my stand came today nice sturdy metal one PEN PLAX $59.99 so im getting there slowly, il get the tank end of next week its oredered..think ill go the 2 filter route..i cant sleep thinking about just one!! lol yawn zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 8)

Thats where my heater is. Between the two intakes. With the two 330's that should be enough water flow. If you didnt have enough flow and the heater was in the middle, you would get one small pocket of warm water. And yea the weather was great yesterday, i live in NJ and it was beatiful out and i LOVE that car!!!!!

i have a fluval 304 on my 55 and it did a great job, and was alot quieter.my daughter has a 10 with the mini on it in her room, and i think it's a little loud for me.but i don't have the 330.
